The New Century Seafood Restaurant at The Century Park Hotel

After the so-called “ocular inspection” of the hotel, we accompanied our kin to the front desk area for their check out requirements and there we met up with the other family members who were ready to fill their almost empty tummies as it was already about 1:00 p.m.!

As soon as everyone arrived, we proceeded to The New Century Seafood Restaurant located inside the hotel's premises (adjacent to the Cafe at the Park) to celebrate their 18th wedding anniversary! The couple were effectively “debutantes” as far as their marriage is concerned. She and her hubby have been very doting parents to their only son who has just entered college life recently.

As we were traversing the stairs, the red carpet fixed on it has some noticeable stains, spoiling the sturdy marble staircase. The carpet definitely needs to be changed or at the very least bathed or shampooed!

We were “lucky 13” ushered by a courteous banquet staff inside the Chinese Restaurant to a round big table, welcoming us to a lauriat and grandiose feast! We understand that this restaurant serves authentic, exquisite and good quality Chinese cuisine.

Steamed Prawns with Garlic

Bamboo Pith with Black Mushroom Soup

Sliced American Snail Abalone with Japanese Mushroom

The debutantes opted for a "Party Menu" (lovely peeps take note we're a large group, that's why!), most of which are specialties of the restaurants cooked in Cantonese style at its finest! Said set menu includes the famous assorted Chinese cold cuts, then followed by the main dishes such as Steamed Prawns with Garlic, Bamboo Pith with Black Mushroom Soup, Sliced American Snail Abalone with Japanese Mushroom, Steamed Lapu-Lapu, Fried Pigeon, Fried Japanese Seaweed and Chicken Roll, and Dried Scallops with Moss Hair. But we were a little overwhelmed by the hugeness of their mushrooms and even struggled to finish all of it!

Fried Pigeon

Steamed Lapu-Lapu

We just noticed it now the so called "Fried Japanese Seaweed and Chicken Roll" looks more like a PLAIN FRIED CHICKEN. We don't see any seaweeds here and definitely the chicken is not rolled. :(

Fried Japanese Seaweed and Chicken Roll (???)

Dried Scallops with Moss Hair

The party menu also includes a dessert.

We had a separate order of Birthday Noodles since everyone was craving for it.

Overall, the food was good, the banquet staff were courteous and friendly, but again the ambiance was a bit dated, simply conforming to the current "face" of the hotel! The restaurant needs a "make-up" to make it more inviting and appealing to the customers.

However, if there are other options, we would opt to have lunch in other equally fine dining Chinese restaurants which will not require the celebrants to have a “fat wallet”! The Party Menu costs around P14,800 plus 10% service charge. The birthday noodles was billed separately.

Of course, the photo bombing at the hotel and thereafter at the City of Dreams made the day more lively!

Till next time,

Welcome, Ber-Months 2015!

Hey Lovely Peeps, I thought I was dreaming but it was real when I heard a Christmas song played over a morning TV show early this morning! As I glanced my phone, it reminded me of the date today, it's actually the first day of the “Ber” months, and it kicks off in SeptemBer! Yeah, right!

I couldn't exactly define how I felt when I woke up. But the thought of the Ber-months, particularly here in the Philippines which actually means Christmas time is around the corner, created some sort of an emotional impact on me. Deep inside, there was like a mixture of joy, happiness and excitement but at the same time bothersome. Hmm, seems odd? I simply shrugged it off, but maybe the latter feeling could be attributed to the “oversleeping” last night or maybe the thought that there are still so many pending reports, blog articles and chores to be done or it could also be due to the fact that September is the birthday month of our loving Mom who is in Heaven (and Dad too) with God and could no longer be with us to spend the yuletide celebration.

For An Asian Traveler, the Ber-months would mean more fun articles to share with you, more stay-cations and travels to explore, more window shopping for all of us, more cheerful events and more wonderful moments to relish, bringing us back to those days when were like kids, like Peter Pan! Generally the “Ber” months make us happy, no matter what life brings. The Ber months are here to give us an excuse to celebrate with families and friends, and to admire and play with the colors of Christmas with the decors in malls, hotels, and in our homes too! Thus, on behalf of An Asian Traveler, we say, WELCOME “Ber” months!

Marco Polo at its Peak!

A couple of days ago, we hopped in the relatively new Marco Polo Hotel at the center of Ortigas for a one-night stay. One reason, it was a long weekend as Monday was a holiday in commemoration of the National Heroes Day, and another, it was an excuse for us to unwind and welcome the “Ber-months” with our loved ones. Wasn't it grand to greet the month of “September” with a bang?

As it was my first time at this hotel (it was the second Marco Polo staycation for June and her HB), I was eagerly, excited to view the inside of this often-visited and well-commented hotel based on wonderful reviews of guests as published in Agoda and TripAdvisor sites.

But lo and behold, what did I find? My exhilaration just faded instantly when I entered the ground floor lobby and the check-in lobby of the hotel which is located on the 24th floor. The said lobbies were jam-packed with people, with a long queue for hotel registration/confirmation, as if there was a “public gathering” or “miting de avance” of some political parties! (Sorry lovely peeps no photos of the said chaotic atmosphere. June took these pictures when no one else was around.)

I just missed seeing and admiring the beauty of the huge and well-designed lobby of the hotel. OMG! Even the hotel ladies staff assisting guests for elevator alone were like confused on whom to assist, just like the confusion on the elevators, as you have to switch in to another elevator to reach your designated room. However, it was not a problem on my part as June's HB was already familiar of the place but it wasn't comforting to know that they were half an hour late to get a room, much more for my other sister's family who have to wait for an available room for over one and a half hours after the check-in time. The wait was too bad for them as they were already tired and have to stay put at June's room! :( They were planning to go out to have some snacks but decided to just order a Double Turkey Burger from the room service.

(P650) Double Turkey Burger on iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato, giant pickles, pink mayonnaise and fries

June may have a very good perception on the hotel especially during their first stay where they booked a Premier Room (click HERE) where the hotel was just newly opened and operational. For them, their first stay at the hotel was memorable, it was like a discovery channel where hotel guests requirements were met, just like the famous Italian explorer from where Marco Polo hotel got its name.

As I entered the hotel room, the long hall way seemed narrow, maybe due to the impact on the earth tones of the walls and decors. Nevertheless, the wood-like panels and tiles made it look sturdy and the manly earth tones appeared rich and looked best especially to men. Ladies like me may not appreciate it as I prefer rich pastel yellow and orange colors!

Superior Room with Twin Bed

The bathroom was brilliant! I love the rain shower and shower head. I heard someone saying that he enjoyed the water gushing out of the rain shower and that it felt soft and good against his skin that he forgot about the time! Oh wow....

What I loved most was the Ortigas skyline at night. It was like the Manhattan skyline from the New York West side, that we were tempted to take a cup of tea beside the floor to ceiling glass window. At that time, the streets (near Edsa Shrine) were flooded with cars, traffic was unbelievable, as if cars were like toys from our vantage point. There was a demonstration from members of the religious sect Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), expressing their freedom of expression, so to speak!

the view from our room at night

the view in the morning

We managed to visit the infinity swimming pool area of the hotel. Approaching the pool, we could hear sounds and the way to the pool was already wet. We kind of smell something like a chemical odor, possibly due to chlorine! The pool was crowded, it was like a public or family pool. Thus, we decided to cut it short.

We had our dinner at the nearby SM Megamall courtesy of one of the family members who treated us at the Tuan-Tuan Chinese Brassiere Restaurant and we availed our complimentary breakfast buffet the following morning at Cucina located on the 24th floor. Food is impressive in variety and taste. (There's no picture of the buffet area since June doesn't like to take photos when it's crowded.)

In summary, the family was delighted during their staycation at this hotel and maybe we will have second thoughts on booking again if Marco Polo Hotel is fully booked or should I say, at its bottom-line peak!

Visiting our Furry Friends at Neko No Jikan (猫の時間) Cat Cafe

We actually had a hard time looking for the place since Japanese address system is completely different from how Western countries work. To make it short, Japanese do it in a reverse order. Anyway, the cafe shop is located in Amerikamura, and on the second floor of a small building. Chimes sounded off as we entered Neko no Jikan cat cafe. Cute and wonderfully bright decors were placed around the tiny restaurant. Japanese staff greeted us but they speak little English. Good thing they have a menu in English. As we perused, we noticed three different sets we can choose from. We pointed out the 1 hour with the kitties + a drink. After that we've been told to wash our hands first before we engage with our furry friends.

We were so excited to see our kitties but as we looked closer we realized most of them were sleeping. There were around seven cats of every type at that time. We wanted badly to play with them but they were not really in the mood. They were like suffering from boredom. hahaha... We didn't blame them. Cats like to sleep a lot and lazing around. Our smile never faded as we were contented just being there. HB and I seemed like proud parents checking over our cute children. :D (I have a video of these cats but I lost my other SD card.)

If you are planning a trip to Osaka and really like or love cats you should consider visiting Neko no Jikan. But if you want to see them just out of curiosity, skip it.

Meeeee-ow!

TuanTuan's Snow Bun Satisfies our Wants!

$

Hahaha! That's exactly one good reason why we went back to TuanTuan Chinese Brasserie for the second time. It is about their super delicious buns! Well, June and I prefer the Crispy Pineapple Snow Buns whereas the rest of the male family members pick the Crispy Barbecued Pork snow buns. These buns are relatively new in Manila (few years ago) which have been introduced by restaurateurs such as TuanTuan, engaged in a Chinese brasserie business concept where Hongkong food specialties can be taken in a fine and contemporary Paris cafe-like environment.

These “snow buns” are basically done in a different manner, compared to the ordinary famous “siopao” bread. Its outward appearance is much inviting that you will not pause to try it! These thin and crisp, milky, flaky and crunchy buns do not only look exquisite but taste divine! That's actually how it tasted on our first try during our first glimpse of the restaurant (click HERE).

But to our dismay, the buns with the pineapple filling at that moment were not available! So, June and I satisfied ourselves with the pork buns instead. Hmmm, these crusty snow buns served hot are indeed to die for and a perfect match for their pot of jasmine green tea!

Crispy Barbecued Pork Snow Buns (P128/3pcs.)

But of course apart from these wonderful yummy buns, we also loved the bright and lively ambiance of this restaurant. The antique chandeliers, the vintage-inspired photo frames mounted on the wall, and other related novelties complemented the Hong Kong French (“Elysian Chinoiserie”) theme of the restaurant. Tuan tuan's likewise promotes its love for the environment wherein its interior include an attractive wall of green plants which was just a touch away from where we were positioned.

As we were about 7 (“lucky 7”) in the group, we ordered the following for our dinner escapade:

Chicken Fillet Curry (P368)

Honey Garlic Spareribs (P298)

Pan-fried Boneless Chicken in Teriyaki Sauce

Halibut Belly with Soy Sauce (P388)

We noticed that the menu contains limited options particularly for main dishes, but on the other hand, it had some benefits....the choosing part was not at all difficult!

One of the male group members really loved the noodle soup that he was able to consume all of it with much “gusto”!

Watercress and Almond Fish Soup with Mini Xiao Long Bao Dumplings, Mushroom Balls and Shanghai Thin Noodles

The said dine-out experience wrapped up another successful “meet and greet” with our loved ones! You may agree with us or not, but hanging out with families and friends in a decent restaurant once in a while can be considered as one of life's pleasures!

The restaurant is quite reasonable (P500/head) , so we recommend this very welcoming restaurant and we look forward to having some snacks in there, but hopefully this time with the crispy snow buns with the pineapple filling!

The Crown Jewel at City of Dreams!

City of Dreams??? Is it for real?

While we were on a cab on our way home, the driver while pointing his finger to the City of Dreams building with digital display of attractive ads and announcements, inquisitively asked us, “what is it in there?” One of us candidly responded and informed the driver that the said structure is composed of three 5-star hotel brands with the casino as the main character. Further, he asked us if anyone can go inside, which we responded in the positive, impressing to him that he can actually go and see the place without having to shell out funds from his own pocket, in other words, “libre ang tingin”!:-) Ooh, so much about the inquisitive driver!

June has earlier “blogged” about the City of Dreams-Manila (the 1st City of Dreams is in Macau) as they spent a grand staycation early this year in one of its hotels, the Japanese-inspired Nobu Hotel. (click HERE). FYI lovely peeps, we don't go to these casino hotels to play games but to divert our attention from the norms that we do on a daily basis. Humility aside, we have been to places where entertainment and casino are the names of the game such as the Las Vegas strip in Nevada, Atlantic City in New Jersey and in Macau, China but we haven't tried their chip rolling business even the people-friendly famous slot machines. Shhhh, just between you and me, we are neither party animals nor alcohol drinkers, we just love good food and enjoy seeing works of art in places such as hotels! Oh yes, we simply wanted to satisfy our curiosity on how amenities and services of so-called luxurious casino hotels fare compared to the rest! Hence, our hotel escapades!

Going back to the City of Dreams (or COD for me), we decided to stay overnight last month at the Crown Towers, the most recent and the 3rd hotel to operate within the City of Dreams premises.

According to some reviews, the Crown Towers is the most costly but the most delightful among the 3 hotels in the COD, the 2 others namely: The Hyatt and the Nobu Hotel. The hefty price would probably be attributed to its name, where “Crown” and “Towers” symbolize royalty, elegance, dignity and honor. Oh wow! Now, I can say, was I dreaming at the City of Dreams?

The lobby entrance was impressive! It was peaceful and beautiful at that time, and there was a sweet smell coming from all the fresh flowers in the lobby, which was surprising as casino hotel resorts would sometimes smell of a cigarette smoke!

The first time I entered the hotel room, I was pleased to see it. Descent enough for a Deluxe Queen. I used to stay in hotels which have stellar reputations and one of the best in the world, so the bright and lovely room was not new to me.

Having a hotel staff assisting up to the hotel room was comfortable. And with a platter of fruits to welcome us boosted our moods.

I loved the white fluffy pillows and the clean sheets, and the hot bath rain shower at night with the signature Lanvin toiletries that I was able to sleep soundly minus the snoring. hehehe

The good night sleep could likewise be attributed to the good food at the Lugang Cafe at the nearby MOA, and the Green Tea Cake and Green Tea with Jasmine Flowers at the Red Ginger of City of Dreams which formed part of our late dinner dessert.

To recapitulate, our stay at the Crown Towers was so far enjoyable. We shared stories and bits of opinion on so many things the next day that we forgot to take our breakfast, and had to rush to prepare for the check-out time and late lunch and guess where? That would be part of our succeeding blogs!

Was Crown Towers the Jewel at The City of Dreams? Well lovely peeps, you've got to stay there to believe it!!!

Visit Philippines Pa More!

$

Considering its mandate and in line with the forthcoming World Tourism Day, the Philippines Department of Tourism in collaboration with the private sector launched various events this year primarily to invite and attract prospective tourists and visitors (both local and foreign) to visit and see the beauty of the Philippines Islands, with the end view of raising potential revenues for the Government, among others.

Cultural Performance

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) which supervises the World Tourism day (which is held every year on 27th September), encourages all countries in the world to spread and talk about the importance of tourism not only in terms of economic related benefits but likewise the communities and environment so as to achieve a better world for all. The World Tourism Day's theme for 2015 is “One Billion Tourists” (#1billion tourists).

As such, the Philippines Tourism Department established a new tag line for its tourism activities for 2015 called, “Visit the Philippines Year” or VPY. This is effectively a supplement to its existing promotional program, the famous and most-abused tag line (either used positively or negatively) “More Fun in the Philippines” #itsmorefuninthephilippines and to motivate its countrymen and other nationalities to visit the country more. Hence, our coined blog title “Visit Philippines Pa More” or VPPM in short! (Note: lovely peeps you can use these as hashtags (#visitphilippinespamore and #VPPM).

One of the events held this month to respond to and boost DOT's theme was a 3-day 26th Philippine Travel Mart at the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia which showcased Philippine products and services (hotels, inns and beach resorts) particularly from the country’s top destinations.

Being lover of travels ourselves, we decided to see “what's new” and being talked about in the said event. In our minds, we thought that apart from domestic trips, probably there could be travel offers and promos for foreign travels. My dear lovely peeps, yup, you heard me right, we would love to move from one country to another especially with a discounted fare but we go anyway even if there's none.

City San Fernando La union

This city tour jeepney can be rented. It is fully air-conditioned with a TV set and Wow Magic Sing on system on board

However, as the Travel Mart at that moment was basically for Philippines, the travel promos being offered were obviously for places around the Philippines. We were surprised to see how the big and small islands in the country, from Batanes to Jolo, were well represented.

Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao

Palawan

Province of Cagayan

Ilocos Norte

Sun Cruises where you can book your Corregidor Tours

In fact, even Samar and Leyte which were badly hit by the typhoon “Yolanda” were there to promote their respective areas and local goods as well. National and local tourism officials and business associates were present during the said event and some of them brought their best products for exhibits or for sale to interested buyers.

Samar Tandaya Trail

We felt we were able to roam around the archipelago for about few hours only and to top it all, we were like tourists bringing back home some gifts, souvenirs and ooooh yes local food! (from honey, carabao milk candy, lemon grass tea, chichacorn (cornick), and others. We also took some brochures we liked, as reference for our future travels. The only downside which we observed was that some booths were selling products not made in the Philippines. How come?

Lambanog (commonly described as Coconut Wine or Coconut Vodka) from Province of Quezon

Lemongrass Instant Herbal Tea from City of Fernando La Union

Ilocanos Sur Sardines, Cabaroan Salabat Tea, Pacpaco Peanut Butter, San Agustin Anchovy Bagoong, Sweet Tamarind Candy, Pias Papaya Pickles, San Francisco Artisan Bagoong from City of Fernando La Union

Footwear from Liliw Laguna

Banana Chips, Camote Chips and Chichacorn (Cornick) from Ilocos Norte

Sukang Iloko, Duhat and Basi Wines from Ilocos Norte

Our dear lovely peeps, we hope with this blog we were able to entice you to visit the Philippines and we assure you guys, you won't regret it! The Philippines remains a beautiful, an adventure-filled and a fun destination in Asia! Mabuhay!

To end the story, we will leave you with this quote from UNWTO Secretary General Talib Rifai: "Everytime we travel, we become part of a global movement that has the power to drive positive change for our planet and all the people".

Was it a Fine Dining Experience at APU?

$

After a night stay at City of Dreams (COD) Crown Towers Manila, we hastily searched for a place where we could have a good late lunch and without having to go out of the COD complex anymore. As we have tried already some of the restaurants in the golden City of Dreams, "APU Authentic Filipino Cuisine" from its outside facade awakened our curiosity. The  artsy way of its logo design outside the restaurant is quite unique, a sketch of a woman's face using a flower blueprint. The said design could probably related to the restaurant's name "APU", which means "grandmother" in the vernacular Kapampangan.

As soon as we were led to our table situated at the edge of the 4 corners of the dining hall, we noticed the elegant ambiance and were enthralled by the almost complete fine cutlery, reflective of its fine dining atmosphere or should I say challenging its customers of their fine dining etiquette. Hahaha! The green banana leaf-like place mats was an added bonus, having an environmental look of the restaurant. As I sat on the couch, I felt I was like a kid as it was too low for the table but my patience made it comfortable for me.

As we were only 4, we just ordered what was simply enough for us, such as beef sinigang (we chose this over pork sinigang), representing the meat section, chopsuey for our veggie requirements, and fried tilapia for our fish needs.

browsing menu selections on iPad

After we placed our orders, a lady staff approached our table mumbling something which made it so hard for us to understand, except for the word “complimentary”. Whatever it was, what she offered was a small plate filled with bite-sized or should I call it “cutie" pan de sal with the accompanying spreads such as yam and liver-spread.

We waited for quite a while for the food to be served when one staff returned to our table with a too-late lousy news that the “pork” sinigang was not available. He offered instead the beef sinigang as a “sub” for the pork, which we simply agreed to avoid further blah-blah. We understood it was bit late lunch already so probably the restaurant lacked some of the main ingredients for the said dish.

Nialagang Baka (P680)

So far, the ordered dishes were properly served and so we started devouring the food as our tummies were grumbling already. So far, it was satisfying but there was no extraordinary taste to it or the so-called “to-die-for” to compensate for the food price tag!

Generally, we almost consumed the food and kinda liked our dining experience at APU except for the few shortcomings pointed out earlier. Probably, I would still recommend it to my balikbayan friends to visit a fine dining restaurant offering authentic Filipino cuisines, but this time they would have to try APU's top of the lines!

Did we really had a fine dining experience at APU? Well what do you think dear lovely peeps?

Afterwards, we stopped at the Cafe Society, which is just adjacent to APU for a good cup of hot green tea, moist chocolate cake and ice cream.

And that lovely peeps how we ended our staycation at Crown Towers Manila in the golden City of Dreams.

The Runway Revolution at the New York's 2015 Fashion Week!

$
0
0
Whenever "fashion" is being talked about, the inner drive in us sparks and it comes naturally. It is probably because of our admiration and passion about this industry even to the minutest detail, including simple trinkets and other accessories. Hence, the inclusion of "Fashion" category in our blog site.

Fashion especially in runways particularly in fashion capitals of the world such as New York City among others, is still being associated with glamour and beauty, catering to “fit” models who are tall, pin-thin, young and pretty.

While this concept may still be true up to now, the recent Fashion Week (of which the culmination is today, September 17th) in New York have changed quite a bit to consider social consciousness, awareness and responsibility. Fashion is not only meant for the young, slim and beautiful but also individuals with disabilities, career oriented people, young urban professionals and achievers who love fashion. This is a wonderful achievement on the part of the fashion industry to embrace everyone regardless of race, creed , age, gender, ability, size, etc., and this is where NY runway shows have never been this so inclusive. Although, we have yet to see the most looked up to and famous fashion designers (YSL, Nicolas Ghesquiere, Hedi Slimane, Raf Simons, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Donna Karan, Vera Wang, etc.) who dominate the runway to bravely allow others to showcase their talents and skills.

One person with disability whose participation at the NY Fashion Week (under FTL MODA) and which had gone viral on the web and in tri-media is Madeline Stuart who has a Down Syndrome. Early this year, Jamie Brewer (actress, activist and model) likewise with a Down Syndrome appeared in Carrie Hammer's Role Runway Models last February.

Rebekah Marine who is also known as the “Bionic” model, an individual with an impaired arm likewise took the catwalk at the New York Fashion Week.

Similarly, other personalities who are considered achievers in their own fields were visible in the runway shows in New York last February, namely: Shiza Shahid, Malala Fund co-founder, Kimberly Bryant, Black Girls Code co-founder, and Maria Correia, World Bank sector manager, among others.

Some successful professionals endowed with brains and beauty likewise have been given the privilege of strutting the runway under Malan Breton's (a known designer from Taipei, Taiwan, and currently residing in New York City) Spring Summer Collection at the New York Fashion Week. One of Malan's models is Amy Kao, a beauty titlest herself, who was crowned as the Miss Stars and Stripes of 2014 and a successful career woman connected with a known international-based consulting group was given the opportunity to participate in the said event. As posted on her Facebook page, Amy indicated that she was so “honored and humbled for this opportunity to walk the runway for this incredible collection and represent Taiwan!” Amy in her tweens is also involved in charity fund raising events in the U.S.

Indeed, the fashion runway has evolved into a more inclusive of individuals not only with disabilities but those who have established a name in their respective fields, a different way of revolutionizing a sophisticated industry, an unarmed fashion revolution, so to speak.

Incidentally, My Useful Tips blog last year relative to the Philippine Fashion Week of 2014 cited that it was the first time in the history of the fashion world that persons with disabilities, in this case, visually impaired ladies got the chance to display their catwalk skills with the assistance of their “white canes”. It was mentioned in the same blog article that hopefully the fashion capitals of the world such as New York, London, Milan and Paris would follow suit.

And Ohhh YES, they did!

Osaka Trip: Ebisubashi-suji and Shinsaibashi-suji Shopping Arcades

Ebisubashi and Shinsaibashi are just beside Dotonbori area. These two seemingly endless roofed arcades are the premier and largest shopping centers in the Minami area of Osaka where many boutiques and established stores fully line both sides of the arcades. It is certainly the busiest place and it gets crowded especially late in the afternoon and at night. You can spend an entire day even just browsing from shops to shops.

Pachinko parlors can also be found here. It's a gaming place using a slot machine and pinball. Players must be over 18 to enter a Pachinko parlor. Photography is prohibited inside. I already took a picture when I read the sign. :D We had no plans to play here. We were just curious what's inside so we entered.

You can also enjoy many seasonal events at the shopping arcades. One of them is the "Yukata" (Japanese summer kimono) festival.

Osaka Castle or Ōsaka-jō (大阪城)

The current Osaka Castle or Ōsaka-jō (大阪城) is not the original but the third one since the Toyotomi and Tokugawa periods. The castle is popular as a symbol of Osaka, with the main tower set up as a history museum. The museum displays the turbulent history of the Osaka castle such as Ishiyama Honganji Era, under Hideyoshi Toyotomi, reconstruction by the Tokugawa Shogunate, reconstruction of the Main Tower in the Showa period, the age of civil wars and, and many other historical facets are on public display.

We were a little bit disappointed that inside of the tower wasn't a typical historical castle we had been expecting. It's more like a museum constructed in the form of a castle. Nevertheless, the castle is air-conditioned and has one elevator up to the fifth floor. The observation deck located on the 8th level offers a stunning view of the whole city, and the museum's proper amount of information will definitely satisfy your historical curiosity. (Sorry for the lousy photos, my other sd card was lost.)

Tappin', Splashin' and Singin' In The Rain: Live on Stage!

$

It was my second time to watch a critically-acclaimed musical from the West End, but this time not in London but in Manila. The producers of the Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia, Wicked and Chicago brought in this spectacular show (entitled, Singin' in the Rain) which started on 20th August and ended on the 13th of September at The Theatre in Solaire Resort and Casino.

As we watched the show on the last day and the tickets were sold at a hefty discount, every nook and corner of the theatre were obviously filled to capacity.

The Theatre grand foyer were swamped with people excited to have souvenirs and photo-ops at the photo gallery with life-sized replica of the main characters and shown on huge screen before the start of the show.

As we were led to our seats by the usher, I was already hearing someone silently humming the classic song, the lyrics of which goes like this:

"I'm singin' in the rain Just singin' in the rain What a glorious feelin' I'm happy again.
I'm laughing at clouds. So dark up above The sun's in my heart And i'm ready for love.

Let the stormy clouds chase. Everyone from the place  Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face I walk down the lane With a happy refrain just singin' singin' in the rain"

The main highlights of the show were as follows:
  1. 1.The stage first scene was 8 decades ago, specifically in the 1920's, very simple yet decent stage production.
  2. 2.The play was based on a film produced by MGM in 1952 (probably this sounds familiar to our parents) witn Gene Kelly (as Don Lockwood) and Debbie Reynolds (as Kathy Selden) as the main characters. The said film was the first of its kind, the first ever Hollywood musical film, a paradigm shift from “silent” to “talking/moving” movies where actors can actually talk, sing and dance.
  3. 3.Don Lockwood's role was played by Grant Almirall/Duane Alexander while Bethany Dickson played the role of Kathy Selden. Bethany Dickson is famous for her role of “Maria” in the musical production of “The Sound of Music”.
  4. 4.The play featured a mix of romance, comedy, and likewise the intricacies of being a Hollywood producers and celebrities at that time, and wherein “glamour” was introduced and where divas and primadonnas of the film industry (in this case, Lina Lamont (Don's co-star and the the famous lady actress at that time) got its name and privileges.
  5. 5. To top it all, the said play was the first musical production with about 12,000 liters of filtered water used for the “rain” scene. Don Lockwood after getting a positive feedback from the lady of her dreams (Kathy, a neophyte in the film industry) was on high spirits. He was extremely happy, dancing under the rain without an umbrella, dripping wet and to the audiences delight especially those who were on the front rows got their memorable experience of their life as they too with their raincoats on were drenched by Lockwood's tappin', splashin' and singin' in the rain! Hence, the blog title.

The play gave me a nice nostalgic vibes. “Good Morning, good morning”, Make 'Em Laugh and the rhyming song “Moses Supposes” with the accompanying choreography and colorful costumes brought a smile deep inside in me! Lina Lamont's unique high-pitched voice made the audience laugh and crazy even if it sounded monotonous and irritating to the ears already. Her voice was definitely not meant for “talking” movies”!

One verse spoken by Kathy which ignited my attention was: “Once, you've seen one, you've seen them all". Quite true in some ways that I was murmuring the words while watching the show! hahaha.

Just the title of the song itself, Singin' in the Rain, made people decide to watch the musical show. It was worth seeing and I would like to see a similar show like this “with splashin and singin'” in the future. Kudos to the actors and actresses of the show!

After the curtain call and the never ending applause, we proceeded to MOA to have dinner at a favorite Lugang Cafe.

P.S. Singin’ in the Rain was brought to Manila by David Atkins Enterprises, Michael Cassel Group, Concertus Manila, Dainty Group and Lunchbox Theatrical Productions and was produced by Stage Entertainment and Chichester Festival Theatre.

The "Spiral Buffet" at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila

$

The Philippine Government used to own the former Westin Philippine Plaza Hotel (one of the best hotels in the metropolis) until its stake and operations was disposed of to the private sector. Decades after, I've learned that the hotel's name has been changed to Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila under a foreign management operation.

Early this month, I thought we were going to dine out in one of the buffet restaurants along the Manila Bay. I was surprised that the driver was being directed to where the Sofitel Philippine Plaza was located. If I had known beforehand, I could have prepared something memorable for the said dine-out!

the lobby at Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila

Hotel Sofitel's predecessor Westin Philippine Plaza Hotel had a special place in my heart. That's where we had our first dine out date with my ex (hahaha!)! Besides, that's also where we held some meetings and conferences during those days where I was so much in love with "career" related matters. Seeing the staircase was like a dejavu, as if I was going down the spiral staircase with my former colleagues and business friends whom I have not seen for more than a decade. I believe the said staircase served as the Hotel's landmark, hence the name "Spiral".

Sofitel's Spiral Staircase

But so many changes have been undertaken already after the hotel encountered a couple of typhoons and storm surges which severely damaged particularly the lower levels of the hotel, where Spiral  is situated. Based on accounts, the said restaurant has been renovated to prepare for the worst, with the end view of of providing "full service" to its customers rain or shine or storm surge.

Approaching the restaurant's entrance, we were ushered to our table with comfortable chairs and nice table cutleries. It was good that our dining table was just beside the water fountain installed below the staircase which boosted our mood and added a beautiful relaxing effect on us.

huge water fountain at the center of Spiral

As a matter of fact, I was tempted to invite everyone to have a photo souvenir with the fountain as the backdrop. (So sorry lovely peeps, the picture didn't do justice to us!) While the lighting was not that bright enough, its softness gave us however privacy from all other guests around us. Since we arrived before the start of the buffet time, we were able to roam around the premises and noticed that the restaurant has a welcome ritual for the night. Some ladies staff brought some kind of a lamp, as if calling the attention of the hotel guests that the buffet time is about to start.

Spiral's ambiance is superb compared to some other buffet restaurants I've been to. It has an almost full-scale food menu.

I super liked the fact that the restaurant has a Cheese and Cold Cuts Room. It looks like a huge freezer where one can just go inside and choose numerous types of cheese and various cured meats (bologna, salami, ham, etc.), capers and olives. Sad to say, I just had some small bits of it.

cheese and cold cuts room

different kinds of cheeses

The bread atelier staff served us newly baked bread placed in a basket and we liked it hot that we almost consumed it. It had a hard crust outside but very soft inside and just right for the carrot soup which we had.

hot delicious bread

One of the staff served us "Foie Gras", a known luxury food made of a fattened liver of a duck or goose, and "au gratin" in a unique way. Surprisingly, a group of foreign guests even requested the staff of the foie gras station to serve them more. But gosh, I realized that I have a simple palate for this kind of French opulent cuisine. Among the four of us, it was June who enjoyed the most. Foie Gras is a french word for "fatty liver".

Foie Gras

June's HB asked one of the staff to give him an expensive gourmet delicacy called "UNI". It's a sea urchin roe commonly known by its Japanese name. I heard June describing that it tastes like an ocean and slimy. :) It was not on the buffet spread but you can ask for it. It's free!

Uni (Sea Urchin)

There are also amazing selection of desserts, from cakes, chocolates, ice creams, gelatos, candies and gummies, and native delicacies, etc. Beverages like soda and juice are not free except for unlimited coffee and tea.

Overall, we enjoyed our meal. The music from the live band above us was an added feature. Our generous sponsor for this memorable fine dining indeed experienced a "splurge" for the evening! He spent almost P12,990 for the night (P3,247 per person). Yes, Spiral Buffet is on the upper level of Spectrum. You have to gorge on the luxury food (e.g. foie gras, uni, lobsters, premium beef, etc.) to compensate for Spiral's pricey price tag! If you want  a 50% discount you need to have an Accor Advantage Plus Card.

Spiral 2 Go also offers some homemade cakes and pralines, jams, tableya, macaroons, cookies, etc. where you can take it home for a few pesos.

Once again, an unforgettable Spiral Buffet night at a once upon a time memorable Westin Philippine Plaza, now Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila!

A Little Shopping at Kansai International Airport (KIX)

Upon arrival at the Kansai International Airport (KIX), we did a little last minute shopping and picked a few Royce chocolates and different flavors of Kit Kat. I noticed a man carrying boxes of chocolates. Then I thought how delicious it must be so I decided to buy some of these Osaka Chocolate Chaine at the Blue Sky Shop. In truth, though, only after tasting it wasn't what I was hoping for. It was more like a cookie, not even a hint of chocolate.

Then we meandered around and I saw a lot of Hello Kitty stuff at one of the shops. It immediately caught my attention. So the "panic buying" began. :) Not really, I just selected a few pieces. While HB bought some boxes of his favorite Japanese Matcha Green Tea.

Our travel to our designated International gate was comfortable and fast. We hopped on a "people mover, an automated tram that runs along the exterior of the airport's building.

I love Four Seasons!

$

Yup dear lovely peeps, I super enjoy visiting frigid countries as they have four seasons (winter, spring, summer and fall) which makes the stay more exciting! The said four seasons have its own unique charms, nuances and delights but there are drawbacks as well. Winter is the coldest with fluffy snow falls like a winter wonderland, spring is the time when frescoes of sunlight appear and plants begin to grow, summer is when people start to plan for outdoor activities and autumn is when vibrant colors of fall foliage are a sight to behold! Oh, that's how amazing nature is! And I am just grateful for being able to experience the wonders of the four seasons!

In terms of food, one of the advantages of having four seasons in a place is that you have a wide array of seasonal food on the table. In various parts of the world with four seasons, year-round menu are normally served and it varies depending on the season and place. There is always an opportunity to look and choose fresh and great foods that are locally grown and are in season. That is why entrepreneurs would opt labeling their business firms (hotels and restaurants) as four seasons mainly for variety or diversity as one of the reasons.

One of the newly established restaurants in Metro Manila (located along the Manila Bay, at the back of SM Mall of Asia) which offer a variety of food is the Four Seasons Hotpot City. We've been to this place four times already and so far one of our buddies seemed to have liked it, making it now as one of his favorite dining nooks!

The main difference of Four Seasons Hotpot City from other buffet restaurants is its hotpot soup base feature. At the center of each table is an induction cooker or some kind of an electric insulator installed on top of the table with a 2-sided stainless shabu-shabu type of cookware plugged on it. As soon as the guests are seated, the staff approaches and pours two kinds of broth or soup into the cookware based on the guest taste preferences. The prepared broth could either be pork, fish, chicken, Chinese herb,  sinigang and sukiyaki. Then choose any mix such as haidilao tomato paste, haidilao pickled vegetable, haidilao mala paste, haildilao mushroom paste and sate. Thereafter, the guests will have to shop around the place and look for the necessary ingredients and condiments for their on-the-spot cooking spree!

Here's a video on how to do it Four Seasons Hotpot style:

There are about 11 food ateliers (or some kind of a high-end market) at Four Seasons. First one is the vegetable section. You will find lots of fresh greens and other vegetables (mushrooms, carrots, celery, bell peppers, etc.) in this section.

Second, is the appetizer and the Japanese food station where you will find an array of maki, sashimi and other Japanese rolls.

Third, is the green salad section with mixed leafy greens and ingredients such as other vegetables and fruits with the dressings parading on the shelf. Best if you're looking for a low-calorie salad to pair for your entree.

Fourth, is the seafood section where almost fresh seafood (fish, shrimp, scallops, squid, crabs) are being offered.

Fifth, is the meat section: beef, chicken, pork, even intestines, liver, blood, they have it there!

Sixth, is the Chinese dimsum and assortment of dumplings.

Seventh, is the noodle and ramen section where different types and colors of noodles abound.

Eight, is the dessert section with slices of decorated cakes, truffles, chocolates from the chocolate fountain, crepes, halo-halo, kakanin, and yes, ice cream with some good flavors (avocado is our favorite)!

Ninth, is the usual buffet cooked dishes such as rice and other viands.

Tenth, is the beverages bar with a variety of drinks from lemonades, hot tea, coffee, fruit juices to even draft beer!

Eleventh, last but not the least the Premium section where you can find the premium wagyu beef. However, get ready to shell out extra money for this high-quality food. It is not included in the buffet rate.

Of the aforementioned, 11 food ateliers, I loved the green salad and the seafood stations. It was not only delicious but it is also healthy. I enjoyed putting all kinds of fish into the cookware and munching them all!

If you're watching your carbs and calorie conscious person, Four Seasons Hotpot City is a must-try, but with the advice to limit your food selection at the vegetable and seafood stations. So far, the ambiance of the restaurants appeared stunning, probably due to the lighting effects.

A few niggles though, the orange couches are tight making us a bit uncomfortable. In two separate occasions some staff were like having fun and high volume discussions especially in the seafood section area (I even saw one keeping his eyes glued to sexy diners) and a group of staff who sing the "happy birthday" to celebrants. One of the things restaurant staffers should never do is "do not have a personal conversation with another staff within earshot of customers". Management should know that well trained staff make their business more successful.

Are we going back to Four Seasons Hotpot City? Maybe! But what is definite, I love the real four seasons!

Four Seasons Hotpot City is a sister company of Vikings, likewise a high-end buffet restaurant along Manila Bay.

Northern Samar Biri Island's Impressive Rock Formations

$

I have to say I was skeptical  when I heard them (HB and my nieces) planning to go to Biri Island to see the Rock Formations. Riding on a motorcycle locally named "Habal  habal" is one thing, but a 45-minute  traveling by a pumpboat is a big concern to me. Because I feel like I am suffocating when there's a strong gust of wind.  Needless to say, I was obviously under stressed and sadly been forced  to withdraw from joining them. Believe me strong and lashing wind scares me more than height. (Just to let you know I did survive the Skywalk Extreme in Cebu.) I'm pretty sure most of you don't have to deal with this kind of problem, but for me, it's a tension  hard to deal with. Anyway, I apologize that I've started this post with my worries.

one of the rock formations in Biri Island

On to Biri Island, I was so envious when I saw HB's beautiful photographs. Views of different impressive  gigantic rock formations sculpted through time by the savage waves of the Pacific Ocean and massive currents of San Bernardo Strait, and the ocean views are just breathtaking.

Be warned though, there are a gazillion of photos to admire and delight your senses. :)

The island of Biri is located in the northern most tip of the province of Northern Samar, facing the blue sea of the Pacific Ocean to the East and the famous San Bernardino Strait to the West. There are seven impressive rock formations in Biri Island namely Magasang, Magsapad, Macadlaw, Puhunan, Bel-at, Caranas and Pinahahawan.

Start to embark on a pump boat ride very early in the morning to avoid relentless big waves. I advise visitors to wear sunglasses and rash guards for sun protection. It was a scorching hot summer day when HB and my nieces visit Biri Island. When they came back late in the afternoon, I was really shocked to see them all super tanned. It was like they stayed there for a month. hahaha!

It is also advisable to bring sunblock, sturdy footwear, a fully-charged digital camera, a hat, towel or sarong (to dry with if you want to swim in the salt water pool). Wear shorts and sandals, since you'll be wading in up to thigh high water to get to some of the rock formations.

After admiring the impressive rock formations, you may want to visit the Biri church sanctuary named Saint Vincent Ferrer Church, which is located in the town proper. According to provincial tourism this well-crafted and meticulously sculpted altar, depicts Hispanic culture for a typical place of worship.  It was built through the consolidated effort of some kind-hearted locals, foreign nationals and donors from nearby towns. It has now become of the tourist attractions of the island because of its grandeur and spectacular craftsmanship

How to get to Biri Island by air, Cebu Pacific Airlines have daily flights to Catarman, capital of Northern Samar. From Catarman, take a 30-minute jeepney ride to Lavezares, and from there, a 45-minute motor boat ride to Biri Island. Then take the Habal-habal (motorcycle). The Habal-habal driver acts also as a tourist guide.

If you're taking a land trip from Manila, air-conditioned buses are available daily to Allen, Catarman and Calbayog. Aircon vans and ordinary buses ply from Tacloban to Catarman route. Get off at the municipality of Lavezares, the jump-off point, and take pumpboats going to Biri Island.

If you're coming from Cebu, one can take a boat or vessel bound for Calbayog City or Ormoc City in Leyte. From Manila, passenger boats travel via Tacloban or Calbayog City.

If you're planning your vacation in Calbayog City, I'd recommend staying at S&R Bed and Breakfast. Please do not hesitate to contact them.

The Yin Yang Effect of Y2 Residence Hotel!

$

When I was informed about a one-night staycation at Y2 Residence Hotel, my first reaction was "Where is it"? Candidly, I've never heard of such place in Metro Manila in my entire stay in the metropolis. I was told that it was actually in Makati City, where business, entertainment and images of frenzied lifestyle are in sight.

My mind continued to work again, with some wild questions hovering around my head. Why is the hotel called Y2? Was it because it was established during the Y2k period? Or is the hotel owner related to Yohji Yamamoto, Japanese famous fashion designer of Y-3 products? Hahaha! But when I "googled" the hotel, I came to know based on their website's logo that the Y2 was based on the Yin-Yang philosophy of balance and harmony. So, that explains its name, which made me more curious to check it out!

The hotel was an hour and a half ride from where we are. Even if the hotel is walking distance to Century Mall (about few minutes by car to Rockwell/Power Plant Mall) and other bars and coffee shops, we encountered difficulty locating it as buildings in the neighborhood were like close next to each other. As soon as we approached the lobby, I noticed it was not as grand but just right for a 3-4 star boutique hotel. However, it has unique features, with Buddha framed arts on the wall, also metals and glass all over in an artsy way with the black and white motif already visible.

In the elevator, we were with a company of business travelers from Middle Eastern countries, and so probably I thought the hotel is frequently visited by foreign jaunt lovers from these countries. Unfortunately, the elevator has no lock security measures as anyone can just hop in and maybe roam around the premises. In other hotels, guests are normally given a key card in order to access the elevator.

When I entered the room, I was awed to see the two-bedroom unit reserved by June's hubby as it was quite spacious despite the lack of sophistication of a 5-star luxury hotels. But with the lower price tag, the clean and spacious unit (inclusive of breakfast) turned out to be a bonanza! It has a living room with amenities such as TV, free WiFi and a sleek furniture. It also has a Japanese mural as an accent to the wall.

On the other side is a decent dining area and on the far end is a fully equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, induction cooker and a microwave. Near the kitchen is another bathroom.

The black and white Yin Yang feature was again utilized inside the unit which flow down to the bedrooms (black and white decors) and bathrooms (black and white tiles). The interiors of the unit has an oriental "Zen" influence to it, with a minimalist theme.

The bedrooms were clean with comfortable bed and white soft linens, in contrast to the negative reviews of some of the guests.

But before throwing ourselves onto our beds, we had our dinner first to fill our empty tummies. We ordered food outside and it was delivered on time. Thereafter, the roomy living room provided us a space and the opportunity to stretch our muscles and joints, trying hard the Silento and Twerk It Like Miley dance swaying our shoulders and placing our hands in the air, with the music coming from June's hubby smart phone and a powerful Bang & Olufsen Beoplay A2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker!

Bang & Olufsen Beoplay A2 Portable Bluetooth Speaker

the speaker is about the size of a ladies clutch bag :)

We slept soundly, waking up to another brighter day. But before leaving the hotel, we went up the rooftop to see the swimming pool. But my excitement faded as the pool looks like a kiddie pool where only a couple of guests could be accommodated.

Good, we had our breakfast first at Y2's Pink Panda Southeast Asian Diner to regain lost energy before climbing up the pool!

So far, the one night stay at Y2 Residence Hotel in Makati was wonderful and quite memorable! Probably, the Yin Yang positive vibe contributed to the joyful moments we had during our stay at the hotel.

The Pink Panda Atmosphere!

$
0
0
Our one night stay at Y2 Residence Hotel was inclusive of a buffet breakfast. I though the restaurant was part and parcel of the hotel, sort of a signature resto, likewise named "Y2"! It was only when we entered the restaurant and when I saw the print on the side walls that the name of the restaurant is Pink Panda (Southeast Asian Diner)! That was so naive of me!

The gorgeous interiors of the restaurant made my eyes wander from floor to ceiling. The owner has an eclectic taste. The decor is artsy, with a mix of modern and oriental inspired theme and an open concrete ceiling with steel structures and led lights. There were paintings on the wall depicting the so called "Pink Panda Atmosphere", rather odd though as it was hard to reconcile what was the art for, just like the mysterious baby panda with a pink skin covered with a thin coat of white fur! There was al fresco corner where guests can enjoy the chill vibe of the outside environment particularly during night time.

We came a bit late so it was expected that the restaurant was quite filled with hotel's guests already. There was a smell of food throughout the restaurant (mostly from its South Asian food) but we didn't mind it, as it was somewhat compensated by the staff's courteousness and its cool hip atmosphere.

The buffet breakfast was just right, on the average side. There was nothing extraordinary about it, maybe because the variety of choices were the usual breakfast food for Asians like us. The more visible were fried rice, curry rice, tocino, hotdogs, different types of eggs (scrambled, omelette, poach, sunny side up), corned beef, fried dilis, fresh veggie salad, cooked vegetables and bread. Coffee, milk and tea (although limited to lipton), cereals, juices, etc. Surprisingly, there was steamed bananas on the plate.

Unfortunately, the restaurant doesn't have its own comfort room. Guests have to go out and access instead the hotel's spic and span comfort room. The place was also bit dark maybe due to the black walls interior and lighting as well.

Despite the said loopholes, we were satisfied with our complimentary breakfast. Personally, I would still like hangin' out at Pink Panda because of its atmosphere. There was quite a positive vibe on me, probably due to the influence of Y2 Residence Hotel's Yin Yang's philosophy!

By the way, we didn't see Anne Curtis there whom I've learned from the grape vine that she is romantically linked to the part owner of the restaurant, Erwan Heussaff!
